Wolfiporia extensa (syn. Poria cocos) is a subterranean fungus that grows as a large, irregular sclerotium (hardened mycelial mass) on the roots of pine trees. Known as Fu Ling (茯苓) in Chinese, it has been a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years, listed in the Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica as a superior tonic. It is prescribed to calm the heart and mind (Shen), support the spleen and stomach, and promote urination. Modern research has identified pachymic acid and other lanostane-type triterpenoids with anxiolytic, sedative, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as a unique beta-glucan polysaccharide (pachyman) with immunostimulatory and anti-tumor activity.
