Fu Ling — The Spirit Mushroom
Poria — known as Fu Ling in Traditional Chinese Medicine — is one of the most revered tonic herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia, prescribed for over 2,000 years to calm the mind, support sleep, and strengthen the spleen. Modern research confirms its unique triterpenoids and polysaccharides support neurological and immune health.
Family
Polyporaceae
Origin
East Asia — China, Japan, Korea; also found in North America
Primary Benefit
Calm, Sleep & Cognitive Health

Wolfiporia extensa (syn. Poria cocos) is a subterranean fungus that grows as a large, irregular sclerotium (hardened mycelial mass) on the roots of pine trees. Known as Fu Ling (茯苓) in Chinese, it has been a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years, listed in the Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica as a superior tonic. It is prescribed to calm the heart and mind (Shen), support the spleen and stomach, and promote urination. Modern research has identified pachymic acid and other lanostane-type triterpenoids with anxiolytic, sedative, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as a unique beta-glucan polysaccharide (pachyman) with immunostimulatory and anti-tumor activity.
Calming & Anxiolytic Effects
Pachymic acid and lanostane triterpenes modulate GABA-A receptors and reduce cortisol, producing calming effects without sedation. Traditional use for anxiety, palpitations, and restlessness.
Sleep Quality Improvement
GABAergic activity of triterpenes supports sleep onset and quality. Traditional use for insomnia and disturbed sleep.
Cognitive & Neurological Support
Pachymic acid demonstrates neuroprotective effects, inhibiting acetylcholinesterase and supporting memory and cognition.
Digestive & Spleen Tonic
Traditional use as a spleen-strengthening tonic. Modern research supports prebiotic activity and gut microbiome diversity.
Immune Modulation
Pachyman activates macrophages, NK cells, and T-lymphocytes, supporting innate and adaptive immune function.
