Agarikon

The Ancient Antiviral Fungus

Agarikon is one of the longest-lived fungi on Earth, growing for decades on old-growth conifers. Revered by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and documented by Dioscorides in ancient Greece, it is now studied for its exceptional antiviral and immune-modulating properties.

Family

Fomitopsidaceae

Origin

Old-growth forests of North America and Europe (primarily larch and fir trees)

Primary Benefit

Antiviral & Immune Defense

Agarikon (Laricifomes officinalis) — raw functional mushroom

About Agarikon

Laricifomes officinalis, known as Agarikon or Quinine Conk, is among the rarest and most ancient medicinal fungi. Conks can grow for 50–75 years on old-growth larch and fir trees. It was documented by the Greek physician Dioscorides in 65 AD as 'agarikon', prescribed for consumption (tuberculosis) and respiratory conditions. Modern research by Paul Stamets and colleagues at the Bioshield Defense Program has identified potent antiviral activity against influenza, herpes, and poxviruses. Its unique lanostane-type triterpenes and beta-glucans make it one of the most pharmacologically interesting fungi in the functional mushroom world.

Exceptional Antiviral Activity

Lanostane triterpenes have demonstrated activity against influenza A/B, herpes simplex virus (HSV-1, HSV-2), and vaccinia virus in laboratory studies.

Respiratory Immune Support

Traditional use and modern research support its role in protecting respiratory tract immunity, particularly against airborne pathogens.

Potent Immune Modulation

Beta-glucan content activates innate immune cells, enhancing macrophage phagocytosis and NK cell cytotoxicity.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Agaric acid and triterpenes inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and NF-κB signaling pathways.
